Humanity prevails regardless of age, which is why we are excited to observe Join Hands Day on May 6, as we do every first Saturday in May. Old and new generations frequently disagree with one another. The older generations believe that the younger generations are indolent and rebellious, while the younger generations believe that the older generations are too rigid and have outmoded mentalities. This stark difference was recently highlighted when the trending meme “Okay, boomer” was used by younger generations to respond to the incessant nagging of older generations. However, the fabric of society is created and maintained through the unity and comprehension of the two generations. This is precisely why Join Hands Day was created: to bring people of all ages together to perform volunteer work.

Both organisations are non-profit and seek to bring together individuals and other organisations from around the world for the greater good of society. The primary purpose of the day is to encourage older and younger generations to volunteer together. In the beginning, individuals could register their volunteer events on the Join Hands Day website in order to gain recognition and publicity. However, in recent years, organising committees have been encouraging individuals to independently organise events and provide volunteer services.
Today, Assured Life Association, another fraternal benefit society, manages Join Hands Day. In addition to providing volunteer services to the community, Join Hands Day provides a venue for the various generations to meet and simply converse. It is possible that one generation will learn something from the next. Moreover, shared experiences and similar likes/dislikes strengthen the connections between two generations that have historically viewed each other as the “enemy.” Therefore, not only is Join Hands Day beneficial for the less fortunate, but it is also an excellent initiative for reducing animosity between the generations.
