Kannada Rajyothsava 2023: History

The origins of the Karnataka Rajyotsava can be traced back to November 1, 1956, when the union of all Kannada-speaking districts formed the state of Karnataka. Aluru Venkata Rao was the pioneer who initially suggested that the Karnataka Ekikarana development serve as a means to unite the state in 1905.

Following the republican transition in 1950, India was divided into territories according to the predominant language spoken in each district. One such territory was Mysore, encompassing several regions in southern India that had hitherto been subject to monarchical rule.

In order to connect with the Kannada-speaking groups, on November 1, 1956, the domain of Hyderabad and a large part of the former royal territory of Mysore were combined to form the state of Mysore. It also included the Kannada-speaking areas of the Bombay and Madras governments. Former Mysore, North Karnataka, and Malnad, which was formerly known as Canara, comprised the three regions that comprised the Mysore state.

The unified state was initially founded under the name ‘Mysore,’ which derived from the former regal state that served as its epicenter. Conversely, the inhabitants of North Karnataka held a dissenting view regarding the preservation of the Mysore appellation. Their disagreement arose due to the name’s strong association with and preference for the southern regions of the newly established state.

Aiming to establish a more balanced and well-represented state, the state’s name was amended to Karnataka on November 1, 1973. Chief Minister of the state Devaraj Arasu presided over this momentous decision.
