King Tupou I Day 2023: King Tupou I Day is held every December 4 or the Monday after if December 4 happens on a weekend. George Tupou I was the first king of what is now Tonga. His birthday was December 4, 1797, and his death date was February 18, 1893. In the early 1800s, Tonga had civil wars. King Tupou I brought the country together and made it a kingdom. He became a Christian in 1831, and when he became King of Tonga in 1845, he made the kingdom a Christian one. From 1845 to 1893, he was King of Tonga. During that time, he fully accepted the Western royal style and got rid of serfdom in 1862.
Taufa’ahau Tupou I was born in Tonga around 1797. He changed his name to Tupou after becoming king as “Tu’i Kanokupolu” in 1845. They ran away from Tongatapu with their son to Ha’atalafale Tu’ipelehake, who lived on Ha’apai Island. To get back at the people who killed his father, Tuku’aho, Tupouto’a was sent to kill Tupounia and ‘Ulukalala. All people, even Ha’a Havea Lahi chiefs, saw him as a low-level usurper and were afraid of him because he burned down Fangale’ounga, a Vaini town.
Before his father died in 1820, Tupou was made “Tui Haapai,” or High King. He had problems with Tongatapu’s rulers, especially Laufilitonga, the last “Tu’i Tonga,” who tried to make him a political leader instead of a spiritual leader. The hardest part of this fight was the Battle of Velata in 1826, where Laufiliutonga lost. At his baptism in 1831, Tupou called himself King George of Tonga. The fact that he was friendly with Fnau Uluklala III, the king of Vavau, led to his many victories.
His great-grandson took over as King of Tonga twice. He died in 1893, when he was 95 years old, after swimming in the water near his house. In history, he is one of only two kings or queens who was followed by a first-degree succession. The other is Louis XIV of France.
