The 16th of February is Kyoto Protocol Day, on which governments around the globe reaffirm their commitment to reducing environmental pollution in their respective industries and commercial activities. Both developed and developing nations evaluate their progress, and citizens hold their respective governments accountable. The purpose of this day is to make consistent progress toward creating a healthy and sustainable environment for all communities on this planet.

HISTORY OF KYOTO PROTOCOL DAY

The Kyoto Protocol is an international agreement designed to reduce the emission of toxic pollutants, such as greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming. More than 190 nations, including the European Union, have accepted the Kyoto Protocol (E.U.). Initially, the United States and Canada were also signatories to the Kyoto Protocol, but they withdrew in 2001 and 2011 respectively.

Global warming is caused by greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, perfluorocarbons, hydrofluorocarbons, and sulphur hexafluoride. In 1992, prior to the implementation of the Kyoto Protocol, the U.N.F.C.C.C. (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) was established. And the Kyoto Protocol was finally approved in 1997.

The treaty was initially signed by 55 nations and went into effect in 2008. More than 30 industrialised nations agreed to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by up to 5 percent below their 1990 levels. The agreement was primarily intended for developing nations, but a significant number of developing nations were excluded.

At the 18th annual session of the Conference of the Parties (COP) in Doha, Qatar, all member nations agreed to renew the Kyoto Protocol, which was set to expire in 2012. The Kyoto Protocol was extended until 2020, and the member nations initiated a similar agreement to control carbon emissions. The agreement was scheduled to go into effect in 2020, following the expiration of the Kyoto Protocol in 2015.
