Lake Superior Day in U.S. 2023: Date, History, Facts, Activities

According to Lake Superior Magazine, Lake Superior Day was founded by lake enthusiasts in Thunder Bay, Ontario, in the 1990s. Then, a decade later, it was revived by the late Bob Browne of Superior, who served on the Lake Superior Binational Forum.

Annually, Lake Superior Day is observed on the third Sunday of July. This year’s date is July 16. It occurs when the communities surrounding Lake Superior come together to celebrate. Lake Superior is the largest of North America’s Great Lakes. On the day of the celebration, free family activities, food vendors, informational booths, live music, boat excursions, and stand-up paddleboarding are typically provided. The purpose of Lake Superior Day is also to educate people about this Great Lake, which contains 10% of the world’s fresh surface water.

The background of Lake Superior Day

According to Lake Superior Magazine, Lake Superior Day was founded by lake enthusiasts in Thunder Bay, Ontario, in the 1990s. Then, a decade later, it was revived by the late Bob Browne of Superior, who served on the Lake Superior Binational Forum. On the third Sunday of July, Lake Superior is the only one of the Great Lakes to be honoured annually with its own day. Having ten percent of the world’s fresh surface water in Duluth’s backyard is a reason for celebration as well as learning how to preserve and respect Lake Superior.

By surface area, Lake Superior is the world’s largest freshwater lake at 31,700 square miles. It is the third largest lake by capacity, following Lake Tanganyika (second largest) in eastern Africa and Lake Baikal (largest) in Siberia. It contains ten percent of the world’s pure surface water, and its cold waters reach a depth of 430 metres. Ontario to the north, Minnesota to the west, and Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan to the south share Lake Superior. Even if the waters of the other four Great Lakes were combined, Lake Superior would still contain more water; it is, indeed, superior.

It is believed that Lake Superior is the purest, clearest, and coldest of the Great Lakes. Lake Superior supports local shipping, commercial fisheries, and recreational industries while providing clean drinking water. Each of the 600,000 residents of the Lake Superior basin utilises the lake’s water daily. Additionally, the lake is essential for fish, wildlife, and plant life. The purpose of Lake Superior Day is to honour and commemorate this magnificent lake. Therefore, you should not neglect the celebration, which will feature numerous enjoyable activities.
