Laos National Day 2023: Laos is a country in Southeast Asia. On December 2, Laos National Day is a holiday. On this holiday, people remember the end of the monarchy’s rule and the start of the Laos People’s Democratic Republic in 1975.
How Laos National Day Came To Be: History
People in Laos usually take the day off for Lao National Day. If it happens on a weekend, the following Monday will also be a public holiday.
Laos was a French protectorate for most of the 20th century. After World War II, resistance to French rule grew, which is what led the Indochinese Communist Party to create the Pathet Lao resistance group. Because of this, there was a war called the First Indochina War. Laos became a constitutional monarchy and independent in October 1953 under the rule of King Sisavang Phoulivong.
The Pathet Laos, with help from North Vietnam and the Soviet Union, overthrew the royalist Lao government and made King Savang Vatthana step down in 1975. This was the first step on Laos’s path to becoming a communist nation.
On the same day, the Kaysone Phomvihane-led Pathet Laos government changed the name of the nation to the Laos People’s Democratic Republic.
The country is thought to be fairly stable, but it is not as rich as Thailand, Cambodia, or India, which are all close by. The landlocked country is also one of the few communist states still in existence. The country is still poor and depends heavily on foreign help, even though it has made changes to its economy after several wars.
