Lebanon Independence Day 2023: History

The Lebanese Independence Day, commemorating the nation’s liberation from the French Mandate that had governed Lebanese territory for nearly 23 years, was officially declared on November 22, 1943. The Ottoman Empire exercised administrative control over Lebanon between 1516 and 1918. In 1920, the commander of French forces in the Levant at the time, General Gouraud, issued a directive establishing the boundaries of Greater Lebanon, or “Grand Liban.” The French Mandate was in charge of the Grand Liban up until 1941.

In 1940, the Vichy Government seized control of various regions in France. As a consequence of this, General Henri Fernand Dentz was appointed high commissioner of Lebanon. Emile Edde, the president of Lebanon at the time, ultimately tendered his resignation on April 4, 1941. Alfred Naccache was also appointed president of Lebanon by General Dents, albeit for a brief period of three months. On November 8, 1943, following the elections for president Bechara El Khoury and prime minister Riad al-Solh, the Chamber of Deputies amended the Lebanese Constitution, thereby unilaterally terminating the Mandate.

In retaliation, the French apprehended and exiled the president, prime minister, and other cabinet members to the medieval fortress of Rashaya. This incident, which merged the perspectives of Christians and Muslims regarding the mandate, sparked massive public demonstrations and international pressure for the release of the Lebanese leaders. On November 22, 1943, in response to increasing pressure from the Lebanese people and numerous international demands, France ultimately acquiesced and liberated the captives from Rashaya. Since then, this date has been observed as Lebanese Independence Day. In observance of national pride, this ancient Lebanese independence landmark and Halabi family mansion is accessible to tourists and visitors throughout the year.
