Liberation Day San Marino 2024: Every year on February 5, San Marino observes Liberation Day. The full title of the public holiday of the Republic of San Marino is the Feast of St. Agata, patron saint of San Marino, and the Anniversary of the Liberation of the Republic from Alberonian occupation (1740). As the name implies, this day is also dedicated to honoring St. Agatha, the patron saint.
The history of San Marino is intriguing. The landlocked republic has only been invaded a few times in its history, which makes sense given its modest size and placement in Europe, a continent that has seen political power conflicts throughout history. Cesare Borgia, often known as “Valentino,” launched the first invasion in 1503, posing a threat to San Marino’s independence until his death in 1507 derailed his intentions.
Then, 200 years later, an Italian cardinal named Guilio Alberoni attempted to conquer San Marino. On October 17, 1739, at the age of 75, Alberoni overran San Marino as part of his intention to increase the Papal State’s power base in the area. Because of his forceful leadership and the fact that he had invaded the nation, the disgruntled citizens of San Marino appealed to the Vatican to overthrow him. Pope Clemente XII was consulted, and on February 5, 1740, he acknowledged San Marino’s independence and sovereignty.
Since the Middle Ages, February 5 has been observed as Saint Agata or Agatha’s Day. Famous Christian martyr Agatha was executed for her refusal to give up her faith in Christ during Decius’ persecution of the Christians in Sicily. She has been honored as San Marino’s patron saint for a very long time. Numerous public gatherings and joyous processions from Borgo Maggiore to the capital city mark Liberation Day.
