On Library Lover's Day, we honor libraries and their books, celebrating the word 'library' as a place to store important manuscripts for a long time.

Library Lover’s Day 2024: In addition to being a day to celebrate love, February 14th is also Library Lover’s Day, honoring readers everywhere. The day celebrates libraries and the incredible, transformative literature they house. Consider this before you question why libraries should be honored: there once was a time when libraries didn’t exist! The Latin root of the term “library” directly translates to “a place that stores books.” Thus, libraries were merely places that the government designated to “stock” books and important manuscripts for an extended period.
The State Library of New South Wales (NSW) was the original initiator of Library Lovers’ Day in Australia in 2006. When the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) joined the effort to promote their love of books, the day was declared a national holiday in 2007. Even though the day’s main goal was to increase awareness of the resources that some excellent libraries provide, it quickly turned into a comforting day for individuals who were “dateless” on V-Day.
These days, Library Lover’s Day is observed globally with a different theme each year! For example, the John & Alison Kearney Library at Bond University went all out to celebrate the day in 2018 with an eye-catching display of a vintage typewriter, pens, and paper. The purpose of the items was to allow guests to send love notes to their favorite library or someone special.
The ALIA topic for 2019 was “Library Love Stories,” and it featured a writing competition for fictional stories about finding love in libraries. On Twitter that year, #LibraryLoversDay was also trending. Participants had to complete a “Matchmaking Form” at an event the South Perth Libraries hosted in 2020. Based on their personality qualities, the library staff then suggested books and writers that the readers might adore. How fitting that union was forged in paradise!
Take Your Child to the Library Day 2024: History, Activities and 5 Reading Facts
Plan a get-together with your pals where each participant writes a thorough analysis of the characteristics of their all-time favorite book character. Give the analysis to someone who hasn’t read the book yet to pique their curiosity about the book that has you so engrossed.
On Library Lover’s Day, why wait until Halloween to dress up as your favorite book character? There are countless choices, such as a figure from “Pride and Prejudice,” “The Hunger Games,” “Twilight,” or “Gone with the Wind.”
Plan a library event where kids with life-threatening illnesses and disabilities are invited. The idea is to pair up with a child and share the plot and book you love with them.
Library Shelfie Day 2024: Date, History and Facts about Library
Even with the advent of Google, libraries continue to be a vital source of instructional materials for students. This is so because books and manuscripts that aren’t even online are kept in libraries.
Lacking the funds to buy novels or reference books? Don’t worry, you can read whatever book you want as long as you have a subscription to a well-stocked library. One advantage: It won’t break the bank!
Not every person lives in a home where there are the hours of quiet needed to study and compose papers. Libraries are invaluable in times like these, especially for students living in dorm rooms.
