Live Long and Prosper Day is commemorated annually on March 26, which is the birthday of Leonard Nimoy, the man who inspired the holiday. Live Long and Prosper, or L.L.A.P., is a Vulcan benediction created by Leonard Nimoy, who portrayed Spock in the “Star Trek” series.

The purpose of Live Long and Prosper Day is to do whatever makes you feel healthier and more prosperous. Captain Spock, the first officer from the 1960s television series “Star Trek,” is credited with coining the term.

The background of Live Long and Prosper Day

In the television series, Captain Spock was a half-Vulcan, half-human Science Officer aboard the Starship Enterprise. He created the Vulcan salute representing the phrase “Live Long and Prosper,” which debuted in the second season episode “Amok Time.”

The Vulcan Salute is performed by elevating a hand with the palm facing outward, extending the thumb, and separating the middle and ring fingers. It is derived from a Jewish priestly benediction gesture and has become the universal sign for “Long life and prosperity.” Peace and long life is the proper response to the obeisance, though it is sometimes said first, with “live long and prosper” as the reply.

Leonard Nimoy was born in 1931 and was a brilliant actor who played Captain Spock for nearly half a century, earning him numerous awards, a spot on “TV Guide’s” list of the 50 Best Characters, and millions of admirers. After concluding that Vulcans were a hand-oriented people, he devised the Vulcan salute.

The salute became so ubiquitous that its emoji was added to version seven of the Unicode Standard in June 2014. The White House also mentioned the Vulcan salute in its statement on Leonard Nimoy’s demise, and the next day, NASA astronaut Terry W. Virts tweeted a photo from the International Space Station depicting the salute as they flew over Nimoy’s hometown.

Leonard Nimoy passed away in 2015 at the age of 84, and Live Long and Prosper Day was created by Matt McCarthy.
