Madagascar’s Independence Day is on June 26, and we cannot wait to celebrate. Before attaining independence in 1960, Madagascar was a French colony for more than 65 years. The struggle for liberty was arduous and violent, but liberty is characterised by vibrant hues. It is the fourth largest beach in the globe and is renowned worldwide for its flora and fauna. It is situated in the Indian Ocean, approximately 400 kilometres from the African continent.
Madagascar has a lengthy and complex history involving many different settlers and influences. Sakalava, Merina, and Betsimisaraka were among the communities that were governed by the local chieftain during the middle ages. In the 18th century, dynasties began to emerge in Madagascar, with Maroserana in the southwest and Andriana-Merina in the centre establishing extensive empires. Menabe and Boina, two western Madagascar states, fell under the dominion of the Sakalava empire. In the 19th century, French Roman Catholics and English Protestants began competing for dominance, and the French began to exert influence over Sakalava. Gradually, French troops began to occupy land, and by 1895, Madagascar became a French protectorate.
In 1947, violence erupted in the eastern region of Madagascar, but the insurgency was easily put down. With between 11,000 and 100,000 Malagasy deaths and 550 French fatalities. Vice-Premier Philibert Tsiranana founded the Social Democratic Party (Parti Social Democrat; P.S.D.) in 1965, and by 1958 France had agreed to allow its overseas territories to determine their independence. Madagascar voted for autonomy from the French community, and the autonomous Malagasy Republic was proclaimed on October 14, 1958.
Independence Day in Madagascar is commemorated with a military parade on a large seaside street, in which associations, schools, and sports organisations also take part. After the parade, there is a large family feast.
