Made In The USA Day 2023: Date, History, Facts, Activities

Made in the USA Day was founded by Joel Joseph of the Made in the USA Foundation and was first observed in 1989. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) regulates the labels on products indicating the country of origin.

Made in the USA Day is celebrated by consumers and manufacturers on July 2 in an effort to increase sales of domestically produced goods. The day is observed just before Independence Day, when patriotic sentiments are at their peak, making it a grand occasion. Made in the USA Day encourages the production of goods in the United States and the selection of these goods by consumers over imported alternatives. The day also honours the companies and brands that manufacture their products in the United States, as well as those that provide employment and superior customer service.

The background of Made in the USA Day

Made in the USA Day was founded by Joel Joseph of the Made in the USA Foundation and was first observed in 1989. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) regulates the labels on products indicating the country of origin. While these identifiers are required for imported goods, they are not required for all American-made products, such as automobiles, furs, textiles, and wool. But what precisely qualifies a product for the ‘Made in the USA’ label? When “all or virtually all” of a product is manufactured in the United States, the brand can request a ‘Made in the USA’ label, and the product is considered ‘American-made.’ This marking is also contingent upon the manner in which the product is advertised, promoted, or otherwise labelled.

It is common for firms to use the ‘Made in the USA’ label as their unique selling proposition. Since American consumers tend to believe that products made in the United States are of superior quality, the label doubles as an immediate assurance of quality. Sustainability-minded consumers prefer to purchase American goods because they are produced in accordance with environmental and labour regulations, as opposed to the sweatshop conditions prevalent in many foreign factories. Even though American goods may be more expensive, many consumers are willing to pay an additional dollar or two for the reasons listed above. Despite the hoopla surrounding American products, the majority of products on the market are still imported from other countries.
