On June 13, Maharana Pratap Jayanti is observed in the northern and western Indian states, particularly in Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Rajasthan. According to the Hindu calendar, the birthday of the monarch occurs on the third day of the month of Jyeshtha, which corresponds to June 13 on the Gregorian calendar. Maharana Pratap Jayanti is observed in honour of the great Rajput monarch of the sixteenth century who defied the Mughal empire’s might. Additionally, Maharana Pratap influenced Rajputana culture, warfare, and scientific thought. His influence is still strongly felt in Rajasthan’s architecture and traditions.
Maharana Pratap was born in 1540. King Maharana Udai Singh II, the monarch of the Kingdom of Mewar, was his father. Chittor was the seat of the kingdom of Mewar at the time. He was the oldest offspring of the king and was named the crown prince.
In 1567, the formidable forces of the Mughal Empire attacked Chittor. Under the direction of Emperor Akbar, the forces were successful in compelling Maharana Udai Singh II to abandon Chittor and relocate to Gogunda. Maharana Udai Singh II passed away in 1572, and despite opposition from one of his siblings, Pratap Singh ascended to the throne and became Maharana of Mewar. His desire to regain Chittor would become his life’s greatest endeavour. He rejected multiple peace treaties with Akbar and refused to give up Mewar’s independence. He fought valiantly against the superior Mughal forces, but he never ceded authority. However, he was never able to gain Chittor back. Emperor Akbar admired him immensely for his steadfast principles.
It was believed that Maharana Pratap exceeded two metres in height. He would don armour weighing over 70 kilogrammes and a weapon weighing 80 kilogrammes! He had eleven spouses and 22 offspring. His eldest son, Maharana Amar Singh I, succeeded him as the fourteenth ruler of the Mewar dynasty. In 1597, Maharana Pratap perished from injuries sustained in a hunting accident. He is remembered for his unparalleled loyalty and affection for his people.
