Malala Day, which occurs annually on July 12, is a significant day for global activism as it honours and commemorates the global icon Malala Yousafzai. She defied convention and rose to prominence at a young age by advocating for women’s education rights and human rights. In addition to commemorating Malala’s birth, the day is commemorated globally by international human rights organisations, the United Nations, and prominent global citizens. Malala Day is so significant because it commemorates the narrative of a young person from a modest background who became a global agent of change.

The background of MALALA DAY

Malala Yousafzai was born into a lower-middle-class family on July 12, 1997. Her father is an educator and an advocate for education. Her mother gave birth to her at home because the family lacked the funds to travel to the hospital. Her appellation ‘Malala,’ translates to ‘grief-stricken.’ She lived with her parents and two younger siblings as a child. Malala Yousafzai was primarily educated by her father, a school proprietor and educational activist who runs a chain of private schools known as the Khushal Public School, named after one of his sons. Malala speaks Pashto, Urdu, and English fluently and has stated that she once desired to become a physician.

Malala Yousafzai is the youngest Nobel Prize winner in history and only the second Pakistani to receive the award. Her advocacy for the education of women and children in her native Swat Valley, northwest Pakistan, where a group of Pakistani fundamentalists known as the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan frequently forbade females from attending school, has earned her international renown. Since then, Malala Yousafzai’s advocacy has developed into a global movement, making her the most prominent citizen of Pakistan.

Malala Yousafzai and two other girls were shot on October 9, 2012, upon their return from an exam, by a member of the Tehrik-i Taliban Pakistan in what was later revealed to be an assassination attempt in response to Malala’s activism. Malala was shot in the cranium and was unconscious and in critical condition at the local hospital. Her condition subsequently improved, and she was transferred to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, United Kingdom. The (failed) assault on her life prompted an outpouring of support from around the world. On the basis of this incident, she gained worldwide recognition.
