Malawi Independence Day 2023: Date, History, Facts about Malawi

For the people of Malawi, achieving independence and gaining their freedom is a significant accomplishment. The territory that is now Malawi was once inhabited by migrating Bantu tribes around the 10th century.

Malawi Independence Day is celebrated annually on July 6. Formerly known as Nyasaland, this country in Southeastern Africa is now known as the Republic of Malawi.
Malawi attained independence from the United Kingdom in 1964; prior to that, it was under British colonial authority. Although roads and railroads were constructed in the 1890s, this primarily benefited Europeans and did little to enhance the welfare of Africans whose land was exploited.

The background of Malawi Independence Day

For the people of Malawi, achieving independence and gaining their freedom is a significant accomplishment. The territory that is now Malawi was once inhabited by migrating Bantu tribes around the 10th century. In 1883, the British sent a consul to Malawi, and by 1891, Malawi had reformed into the British Central African Protectorate. These events occurred in the nineteenth century. Nyasaland was not named until 1907.

Numerous Africans felt compelled to speak out against the United Kingdom’s rule. Numerous infrastructures were developed, but it appeared that only Europeans took benefit of them. In response, Africans banded together and established the Nyasaland African Congress (N.A.C.). After working and studying abroad, Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda returned to Malawi in 1958 to become the leader of the National African Congress, which later became the Malawi Congress Party (MCP).

The M.C.P. won the hearts and minds of many Malawians, and the election for the new legislative body inspired the participation of the vast majority of the country. Two years later, the party was granted the authority to manage and direct internal affairs. Malawi eventually became a fully independent republic on July 6, with Banda as its first president and a new constitution.
