WHAT MALDIVES VICTORY DAY IS ALL ABOUT

We celebrate Maldives Victory Day every year on November 3 to remember how the Government of Maldives beat the People’s Liberation Organization of Tamil Eelam (PLOTE) in a coup d’état. Every year, people all over the Maldives celebrate this day, which is also a government holiday. All of the shops and schools are closed today.

Maldives Victory Day is a celebration of beating a very dangerous coup attempt. But this wasn’t the first coup. Several attempts were made in the 1980s to kill Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, who was president of the Maldives at the time. Gayoom was an Islamic scholar and leader who was respected by both parties and the people of the Maldives. Several human rights groups have accused Gayoom of being corrupt and violent for political reasons, including murder. Though, Gayoom was chosen by the people of the Maldives to be president, and his government stayed peaceful for many years.

After the first two coup attempts failed, 80 armed soldiers from the People’s Liberation Organization of Tamil Eelam arrived in Male, the capital city, pretending to be tourists. These hired guns were well-organized and had a lot of weapons. They quickly took over the city, including the airport, ports, radio and TV stations, and more. The President was led to safety, and he asked for help from the U.S. and U.K., but they were too far away to help. Based on their advice, the President contacted India. India then set up an emergency meeting and began Operation Cactus, which sent Indian troops to the Maldives to stop the coup.
