When President Gayoom was taken to the home of the defense minister, the minister personally led the president to a safe house.
Maldives Victory Day 2023: Maldives Victory Day is held on November 3 every year. The Government of Maldives beat the people who tried to take over the country in a coup on this day. The whole country celebrates the day because it is a government holiday. Several formal events, parades, speeches, and a ceremony to raise the flag are often part of the day’s celebrations. The day is a celebration of how the whole world worked together to help the Maldives government. The people of Maldives also remember and show how much they love their country on this day.
We celebrate Maldives Victory Day every year on November 3 to remember how the Government of Maldives beat the People’s Liberation Organization of Tamil Eelam (PLOTE) in a coup d’état. Every year, people all over the Maldives celebrate this day, which is also a government holiday. All of the shops and schools are closed today.
Maldives Victory Day is a celebration of beating a very dangerous coup attempt. But this wasn’t the first coup. Several attempts were made in the 1980s to kill Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, who was president of the Maldives at the time. Gayoom was an Islamic scholar and leader who was respected by both parties and the people of the Maldives. Several human rights groups have accused Gayoom of being corrupt and violent for political reasons, including murder. Though, Gayoom was chosen by the people of the Maldives to be president, and his government stayed peaceful for many years.
After the first two coup attempts failed, 80 armed soldiers from the People’s Liberation Organization of Tamil Eelam arrived in Male, the capital city, pretending to be tourists. These hired guns were well-organized and had a lot of weapons. They quickly took over the city, including the airport, ports, radio and TV stations, and more. The President was led to safety, and he asked for help from the U.S. and U.K., but they were too far away to help. Based on their advice, the President contacted India. India then set up an emergency meeting and began Operation Cactus, which sent Indian troops to the Maldives to stop the coup.
People should respect a government that they chose. We want to respect the people’s votes and choices.
We like to watch the parades and other public events. The events where we raise the flag are a lot of fun.
Maldivians enjoy this day as a way to honor who they are and their country. We love seeing how happy and sure of themselves they are.
