We commemorate Mario Day annually on March 10 because “Mar10” looks like Mario’s name when written out. Mario Day has occurred on March 10 approximately every year for the past decade. Although the exact year of the holiday’s inception is unknown, supporters began celebrating prior to Nintendo’s official adoption of the holiday in 2016. When Nintendo formally adopted the holiday and began commemorating it annually, they began promoting new and old games, offering special deals and discounts, hosting Mario-themed events, and promoting sales on some games.

Donkey Kong was Mario’s first game, released by Nintendo in 1981. acclaimed Japanese video game designer Shigeru Miyamoto, who also created Super Mario, Donkey Kong, The Legend of Zelda, and Starfox, designed the animated character’s appearance. Due to the popularity of the Mario Bros video games, a 1993 film adaptation titled Mario Bros was released, but it was a commercial and critical failure. This was among the earliest attempts to adapt a video game into a film.
