Existence is one of the fundamental human liberties. At least once, every society has fought for freedom. Those who are directly affected by political conquests have a difficult time surviving.
On July 31, we observe the Martyrdom Day of Shaheed Udham Singh. This day commemorates the history of the Jallianwala Bagh atrocity and how it affected the life of Shaheed Udham Singh. He is a historical figure from the Indian independence struggle against British colonial authority. General Dyer was given the order to open fire on the gathering protesting the arrest of pro-Indian independence leaders. O’Dwyer was murdered by Shaheed Udham Singh, who was executed for homicide in 1940. The day is observed annually to honour the valiant liberation fighters.
Existence is one of the fundamental human liberties. At least once, every society has fought for freedom. Those who are directly affected by political conquests have a difficult time surviving. India was once one of the world’s wealthiest nations. When European colonisation reached the subcontinent, however, the nation plummeted from its apogee to the depths of misery within a few years. The internal conflict between the states facilitated the nation’s conquest. Such conquests always result in a high number of casualties.
A few decades ago, India under British authority was not the economic powerhouse it once was. Indians were dissatisfied with this prospect, and the demand for independence and self-government intensified. When the demand for freedom is prevalent, efforts to suppress it will also increase. Jallianwala Bagh was the result of such a British endeavour. The peaceful crowd assembled at Jallianwala Bagh to attend a religious festival and protest the arrests of Drs. Saifuddin Kitchlew and Satya Pal was shot by order of Reginald Dyer. The soldiers obliged the command, and a massacre ensued. The brutality of the event, which resulted in the deaths of hundreds of innocent civilians, sent shockwaves throughout the entire country and even to Britain. The event became a linchpin in the nation’s liberation struggles against an Empire where it was said that the sun never set.
Shaheed Udham was among the crowd, and he narrowly evaded death. The sight of his fellow compatriots dying helplessly around him tormented him for the remainder of his life. In 1940, he accomplished his mission by assassinating Michael O’Dwyer, who was among those culpable for the entire event. Udham Singh’s existence ended in the same year he was executed for the assassination. However, his life is immortalised in the imaginations of Indians who sought vengeance for the Amritsar incident. Today, we are commemorating his life and remembering the events that led him to his path.
