The Martyrdom of Guru Arjan Dev Sahib is commemorated annually on June 16 in India. It is a day to remember and honour Guru Arjan Dev, a religious figure who sacrificed his life for the Sikh people. This holiday is typically observed annually by perusing the entire Sikh holy book. In some years, after a day of devotion, there are processions where people receive candies. It is essential to note that this day is not only about regret or sadness; it is also a celebration of his life and the lives he influenced.

The background of Martyrdom of Guru Arjan Dev Sahib

Guru Arjan Dev, born in 1563, was one of the ten Sikh Gurus who founded Sikhism. He contributed the most to the religion among all others. He also compiled spiritual poetry and musical ragas in the Adi Granth, which was enshrined in Harmandir Sahib. The prophets also required Sikhs to donate ten percent of their income to charity.

In 1605, the newly appointed Emperor Jahangir envisioned transforming the country into a complete Islamic empire. He demanded that Guru Arjan Dev convert to Islam; Guru Arjan Dev refused. Guru Arjan Dev was captured by Emperor Jahangir in 1606 due to his reluctance to convert to Islam, the spread of Sikhism in the region, and his enduring influence on the populace. He was incarcerated in Lahore, making him the first of the two martyred Sikh Gurus.

Unimaginable was Guru Arjan Dev’s torment. He was forced to sit on hot plates while hot sand was spilled over him. This lasted a minimum of five days. On the final day, he was taken to the River Ravi, never to be seen or heard from again.

Gurudwara Deha Sahib was constructed on the riverbank where Guru Arjan Dev was executed. On this day, Sikhs from all over the region commemorate his life, sacrifices, and significant contributions to Sikhism through processions, worship services, and peaceful gatherings. This is a means by which Sikhism will continue to exist for future generations.
