The British powers in Kenya apprehended him in October 1952, along with four others: Achieng’ Oneko, Bildad Kaggia, Fred Kubai, Kung’u Karumba, and Paul Ngei. His responsibilities included organizing and supervising the Mau Mau movement. Mau Mau was an insurgent organization that devised a scheme to depose the British colonial administration that occupied Kenya at the time. The Mau Mau Society was actively engaged in a conspiracy to overthrow the colonial government. In the year 1952–53, these six Kenyan nationalists were prosecuted in Kapenguria and sentenced to prison in Northern Kenya. Their moniker evolved into the ‘Kapenguria Six.’

Their apprehension represented a pivotal moment in the ongoing quest for autonomy. As a consequence, the 20th of October was designated a national holiday in remembrance of these six freedom fighters and to commemorate the occasion. Since its inception by activists in 1958, the holiday has amassed an immense following by 1959. On October 20, 1963, following Kenya’s independence, the date was formally proclaimed Kenyatta Day.
