Math has existed since approximately 3000 BCE and has developed over time. Some Mesopotamian and Egyptian mathematical texts date back to between 2000 and 1800 B.C.
Every year, Math Storytelling Day is observed on September 25. When individuals hear the word “math,” they are frequently uninterested. Math is a difficult discipline to master and requires practice, to be fair. But who said it cannot be mastered in an enjoyable manner? Math Storytelling Day encourages individuals to move beyond rote memorization and develop a greater interest in the subject through the use of storytelling.
Math has existed since approximately 3000 BCE and has developed over time. Some Mesopotamian and Egyptian mathematical texts date back to between 2000 and 1800 B.C. Math is a crucial subject for students pursuing careers in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics. However, without an innate affinity for numbers, the topic can be intimidating and deter individuals. This is partially attributable to how math is taught in institutions around the world. The emphasis on memorization rather than learning and applying concepts has caused more injury than good.
Nonetheless, people have devised a variety of methods to make arithmetic a friend rather than an enemy. One such strategy is mathematical storytelling. This can be accomplished through a variety of means, including games, storybooks, puzzles, and videos. In 2009, the Natural Math Community established Math Storytelling Day. Dr. Maria Droujkova was inspired after reading “What Should I Do on Your Birthday?” by Seth Godin. Dr. Droujkova determined that Math Storytelling Day should be celebrated with loved ones on her birthday, September 25.
Intriguingly, the first individual to respond to her math stories was Sue VanHattum, with whom she shares a September 25 birthday. They desired to promote math narrative in a variety of forms and share it with people of all ages and social groups. Math Storytelling Day has been observed for more than a decade, and you can participate in on the fun by sharing your own math-teaching and math-loving tales.
