Mauritius is a country in the Indian Ocean, east of Madagascar, consisting of four distinct islands, the largest of which is simply called Mauritius. Prior to attaining independence as an independent Commonwealth nation, Mauritius was a colony of the United Kingdom. The nation is located along the southeast coast of Africa, east of Madagascar, and is considered to be part of the African continent.

The background of Mauritius Independence Day

On March 12 each year, Mauritius celebrates Independence Day. The island nation of Mauritius observes this day as a national holiday to commemorate the anniversary of its independence from the British Commonwealth.

Officially known as the Republic of Mauritius, Mauritius consists of four distinct islands: Mauritius, Rodrigues, Agalega, and St. Brandon. Mauritius is the principal island, and Port Louis, the capital, is located on the principal island. This island nation’s capital metropolis is also its most populous city.

Portuguese were the first to occupy Mauritius; however, they did not enjoy living on the islands and shortly abandoned them. The Dutch subsequently occupied the islands and established settlements there. However, the settlements were not fruitful, and the Dutch left the islands shortly thereafter.

After the Dutch, the French occupied the islands of Mauritius and brought African and Indian slaves to labour on the plantations they established. Later, during the Napoleonic Wars, the British seized the islands and transformed Mauritius into a plantation colony within the British Empire.

The British government brought indentured servants from around the globe to the islands to work on the plantations after slavery was abolished. After the World Wars, universal suffrage was granted to the people of Mauritius. Over time, tensions increased on the island, and Britain recognised the necessity of relinquishing its former colonies. The English monarch remained head of state after Mauritius adopted a new constitution and elected a new prime minister.
