East Timor’s Memorial Day History
Nestled between the South China Sea and the Indian Ocean, East Timor is an island nation situated in the eastern region of Timor, an Indonesian archipelago. East Timor’s closest neighbor, 400 miles south of Indonesia, is Australia, which is a startling fact about the country. The Portuguese began colonizing East Timor in 1520, and the Dutch claimed the western part of the island, along with numerous neighboring islands.
After years of conflict over the island, Portugal and the Netherlands signed a treaty in 1860 that divided Timor. Portugal was thus awarded the western enclave of Oecussi in addition to the eastern half of the island. Australia and Japan fought over the island during World War II, and during the Japanese occupation that followed, almost 50,000 East Timorese people perished. In 1949, the Netherlands gave up West Timor and other colonies in the Dutch East Indies, and the country of Indonesia was established.
The Portuguese abruptly left their colony in 1975, after 455 years of colonization. East Timor’s independence, however, was short-lived as Indonesia invaded nine days later, and in 1976, the region was made into a province of Indonesia. The Commission for Reception, Truth, and Reconciliation in East Timor calculated that at least 102,000 people died as a result of the conflict during this Indonesian occupation.
Reports state that over 80,000 people perished from disease and starvation, and 18,000 people were killed in combat. December 7, 1975, the date of the Indonesian invasion, was designated as a day of remembrance and tribute to the courageous individuals who lost their lives during the occupation.
