MHIP Day in Mizoram 2023: Date, History, Facts about The Rights of Women in India

MHIP Day is observed annually on July 6 in Mizoram, India. M.H.I.P. is an acronym for ‘Mizo Hmeichhe Insuihkhawm Pawl,’ which means ‘binding women together.’ The M.H.I.P. is the largest NGO in the state of Mizoram and the only one dedicated to the welfare of women. Through philanthropic humanitarian work and local advocacy, M.H.I.P. empowers and educates Mizo women about their rights. In addition, they provide them with vocational training and group courses in order to give Indian women a foundation of independence and a sense of capability. MHIP Day recognises the organization’s efforts as a champion for the welfare of women.

The background of MHIP Day in Mizoram

Between 1850 and 1915, the first phase of the Indian women’s liberation movement occurred. British colonialism introduced European concepts as well as the issue of gender roles and individual rights. Early efforts to end widow-immolation, a tradition in which widows were required to self-immolate following the death of their spouses, were led primarily by men. Efforts to free Indian women from archaic social duties were hampered by the rise of nationalist ideals. Nationalists advocated resistance to European morals and a return to ancient customs.

After World War II, Indian feminists began redefining the roles of women in society, particularly in the workplace and in national politics. Inequalities including wage disparities, harassment, and demotion to menial positions. Women began to recognise the role that class differences in terms of caste, affluence, and education play in impeding nationwide empowerment efforts. In the 1960s and 1970s, the emphasis shifted to empowering women at the grassroots level.

M.H.I.P. was established on July 6, 1974. The M.H.I.P. was registered under Registration No. 5 of 1977 and has its headquarters in Aizawl as the only organisation serving women and the most prominent volunteer organisation in the province. At the time of the organization’s inception, Mizoram was a Union Territory. This is regarded as the third phase of the feminist movement in India. M.H.I.P.-like organisations continue to bear the torch of female empowerment, elevating and enlightening the women of Mizoram province.

The Legal Services Authorities Act grants sexual assault victims the right to receive free legal aid or assistance from the Legal Services Authority, which must also provide the services of an attorney.

The Equal Remuneration Act prohibits remuneration discrimination on the basis of gender.

During the trial, sexual assault victims can record their statements alone in front of a female police officer or a district magistrate.

Under Section 498 of the Indian Constitution, women are protected from verbal, sexual, and economic domestic violence.

The Workplace Act permits Indian women to submit complaints against workplace harassment.
