Miss American Rose Day 2023: Date, History, Facts about Beauty Pageants

Miss American Rose Day, observed on October 20, is linked to the Miss American Rose pageant. The competition honors the education, achievements, talents, social service, and professional careers of American women of every age. This day serves as a continuation of the pageant. We are reminded to value the distinctive abilities and accomplishments of the women in our lives and ourselves. There are difficult times when we neglect to be kind to ourselves. Miss American Rose Day is an exceptional occasion for women to express their affection and solidarity with one another.

The background of Miss American Rose Day

A beauty pageant is an occasion (or sequence of occasions) wherein a diverse array of women vie for the opportunity to exhibit their abilities. In contrast to the past, when pageants were predominantly evaluated on the basis of physical appearance, contemporary standards also incorporate charisma, talent, social responsibility, intelligence, and values.

As an integral component of the Eglinton Tournament, Archibald Montgomerie, the 11th Earl of Eglinton, orchestrated a beauty pageant in 1839. A recreation of a medieval joust that had occurred in Scotland comprised the pageant. The contest was won by the Duchess of Somerset, Georgiana Seymour, who also secured the title ‘Queen of Beauty.’

In 1854, Phineas Taylor Barnum, an entertainer, established the first contemporary American pageant. Regrettably, the pageant was promptly canceled as a result of public outrage; consequently, daguerreotypes—portraits of the contestants affixed to silvered copper plates—were utilized for evaluation purposes.

The 1921 Inter-City Beauty Contest in Atlantic City gained immense popularity. This is the origin from which contemporary beauty pageants have emerged. The purpose of the event was to attract summer visitors and encourage them to remain in the area beyond Labor Day. The title of ‘Miss America’ was bestowed upon the victor of this pageant. Herb Test, a local journalist, achieved historical significance when he bestowed this title upon Margaret Gorman, who was the inaugural Miss America.

As a result of the numerous controversies that the pageantry incited, its prominence declined. Producer Lenora Slaughter revitalized the pageant in 1935 by incorporating Hollywood. Subsequently, the victor would be extended screen testing and prospects for stardom in films, television programs, or both. Furthermore, Lenora Slaughter made the additional decision to award the victor a $5,000 college scholarship. The Inter-City Beauty Contest in Atlantic City has undergone a transformation, gaining prominence and transforming into the current Miss America, Miss World, and Miss Universe competitions.
