Moldova is a country in Eastern Europe that was formerly part of the Soviet Union. The country's neighbours include Romania and Ukraine. A significant portion of Moldovan territory was a part of the Moldavian principality from the 14th century until 1812, when it was ceded to the Russian Empire and became known as Bessarabia.

Independence Day in Moldova is annually observed on August 27. The name in Romanian is “Ziua Independenței.” This is the National Day of Moldova. It commemorates the 27 August 1991 adoption of the Declaration of Independence from the Soviet Union. Celebrations in Moldova include pyrotechnics, concerts, and military parades. The president also delivers a patriotic address to the nation. As it is a public holiday, the majority of citizens and employees have the day off, and, similar to other holidays, the majority of businesses in Moldova are closed on August 27 each year.

The background of Moldova Independence Day

Moldova is a country in Eastern Europe that was formerly part of the Soviet Union. The country’s neighbours include Romania and Ukraine. A significant portion of Moldovan territory was a part of the Moldavian principality from the 14th century until 1812, when it was ceded to the Russian Empire and became known as “Bessarabia.”

In 1856, Southern Bessarabia was returned to Moldavia, and in 1859, it was merged with Wallachia to create Romania. However, in 1878, Russian rule was quickly reinstated over the entire region. During the Russian Revolution of 1917, Bessarabia briefly became the Moldavian Democratic Republic, a self-governing state within the Russian Republic. The Moldavian Democratic Republic proclaimed independence in February 1918 and subsequently merged with Romania later that year following an assembly vote.

As a result of the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact, Romania was forced to cede Bessarabia and Northern Bukovina to the Soviet Union in 1940, resulting in the establishment of the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic. As the Soviet Union was disintegrating on August 27, 1991, the Moldavian SSR declared independence and adopted the name Moldova.

The act establishing the Commonwealth of Independent States (C.I.S.) was signed by Moldova and ten other Soviet republics on December 21, 1991. Official recognition of Moldova’s independence occurred on March 2, 1992, when the country became a member of the United Nations.

Prior to 1991, the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic held parades in honour of the October Revolution and Victory Day. In 2001, however, the first military parade in honour of their independence was conducted.
