Bob Matthews, the originator of Holiday Insights from Rochester, New York, conceived of this enjoyable day in 2016. He chose June 14 to honour his daughter Kimberly’s birthday. As a child, Kimberly idolised monkeys and anything associated with them. Bob asserted that his family was subjected to an excessive amount of tension. At the very least, they needed one day to forget about their stress, problems, and concerns and simply enjoy themselves.

The phrase “monkey around” means to go with the flow, do whatever you want (as long as it’s legal and secure, of course), enjoy leisure time, and play around. Although the origin of this idiom is uncertain, it is likely derived from the physical image of monkeys playing around. The phrase is also associated with “monkey business,” whose origin can be traced to the 1832 coinage of the term “monkeyshine.” The term’monkeyshine’ refers to innocuous pranks or mildly boisterous behaviour based on a person’s amusing personality; it also means “disreputable behaviour.”

It functions as a reminder not to take life too seriously. After a week of school or work, we all require some time to relax or engage in leisure activities. Observations of primates in zoos most likely inspired the phrase. They seem to have a casual outlook on life.
