European settlers first became interested in Mozambique in the fifteenth century. The first time that Europeans visited Mozambique was during Vasco Da Gama’s expeditions. Portugal successfully controlled the water and the marine trade routes, leading to its dominance over the region by 1530. Once maritime trade routes were established, Mozambique became easily accessible to colonial powers, who promptly seized control of the nation’s politics and government.
Mozambicans decided it was time for self-rule by the middle of the 1960s. An armed guerrilla campaign against the colonists began in September 1964 as a result of the growing anger among Mozambicans and the liberation movements of other territories from Portuguese domination. The Mozambique Liberation Front’s leader in the liberation movement was Eduardo Mondlane, also referred to as Frelimo.
In the northern part of Mozambique, he began a guerilla struggle against the Portuguese. His party soon asserted that it had created its own networks in the northern areas for commerce, education, and administration. A bomb was planted in a book that was sent to Mondlane at the Party Headquarters in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, on February 3, 1969, by an unidentified assailant.
He opened the package not knowing about the scheme, and that’s when the bomb detonated, killing him. Mozambicans thought it was the work of the colonial authority, even though no one was ever able to identify the true offenders. Over 10,000 Mozambicans are known to have given their lives throughout the nearly ten-year battle. In 1974, he succeeded in reaching a ceasefire with Portugal, and the following year, Mozambique attained independence.
