To force Japan to surrender and end World War II, the U.S. bomber Enola Gay unleashed Little Boy, the first atomic bomb ever used in combat, on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945.
On August 9 each year, Nagasaki, Japan observes Nagasaki Memorial Day in remembrance of the fatalities of the atomic bombing during World War II. Nagasaki was the second city to be bombed, three days after the first city, Hiroshima. Japan is the only nation to have experienced nuclear attacks during a conflict. In 2017, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons Treaty, which prohibits participation in all nuclear weapon activities. The treaty entered into effect on January 22, 2021.
To force Japan to surrender and end World War II, the U.S. bomber Enola Gay unleashed Little Boy, the first atomic bomb ever used in combat, on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. Approximately 80,000 people perished in the explosion, and thousands more succumbed to radiation exposure subsequently. Japan had caused many casualties among the Allies during the conflict, but refused to surrender despite the devastation. Therefore, the United States decided to launch a second bomb to force Japan to surrender.
On August 9, 1945, three days after the initial attack, the U.S. Bockscar bomber unleashed the Fat Man bomb on the city of Nagasaki. The device contained the same amount of energy as 22,000 tonnes of T.N.T. An estimated 40,000 individuals perished as a result of the explosion’s devastating effects on Nagasaki. Injuries such as burns, radiation illness, and other injuries resulted in the deaths of a greater number of inhabitants in the aftermath. Nagasaki was nestled in narrow valleys between mountains and had a lower population, which reduced the bomb’s impact. After this second bombardment, on August 15, 1945 (Japanese time), the Japanese emperor Hirohito announced his country’s surrender via radio broadcast.
On September 2, 1945, a formal surrender agreement was signed aboard the American battleship U.S.S. “Missouri” in Tokyo Bay, resulting in the conclusion of World War II. An estimated 70,000 to 135,000 people in Hiroshima and 60,000 to 80,000 people in Nagasaki perished as a result of the two explosions. As a result, Nagasaki Memorial Day is observed to honour the victims of the bombing, promote peace, and raise awareness of the significance of avoiding future conflicts and nuclear weapons’ destructive potential.
