Sir Charles Wheatstone created the first stereo 3D illustrations in 1838. In the second half of the nineteenth century, viewing 3-D photographs at home became a popular pastime.

The 20th century witnessed the invention of 3D films, comic books, holography, and other methods for viewing 3D representations of the world. Virtual, augmented, and mixed reality technologies have enabled new methods of creating and interacting with three-dimensional content. Since 1915, due to the cost and techniques required to produce and broadcast 3-D films, they have been confined to a segment in the film industry. In the 1950s, 3D films were quite popular in American cinema, and in the 1980s, they experienced a global renaissance.

Lenny Lipton, a filmmaker, inventor, novelist, and songwriter, has left an indelible mark on a variety of 3.D components. In the early 1980s, he began his career by founding StereoGraphics Corp. In 1989, StereoGraphics introduced CrystalEyes, a stereo visualization system used for medical imaging, aerial mapping, and molecular modeling.
He was also the creator of the ZScreen polarization modulator, which enabled a projector to display the left and right portions of a stereo pair on the same screen. This method, which was introduced in 1988, was used for molecular modeling and visualization of aerial cartography.
