Under the trade name Slurpee®, 7-Eleven and its subsidiaries A-Plus and Speedway sell carbonated slushies. Slurpees were likely conceived by accident in the late 1950s, when a businessman named Omar Knedlik broke his soda fountain and froze his sodas. As soon as the sodas became frosty, Knedlik offered them to his patrons. It became an instant phenomenon. Consequently, he created the equipment for carbonated beverages. Thus, both the Slurpee® machine and the beverage came into existence.
After a successful trial of Slurpee® machines at approximately 100 locations, 7-Eleven signed a licencing agreement with the Icee Company in 1965 to sell its product under specific terms. At the entrance of a freezer, each Slurpee® machine flavour has its own nuzzle. When Slurpees were first introduced, the dispenser was located behind the counter and the product was distributed by the cashier. There are numerous Slurpee® flavours, including Frozen Cherry, Coca-Cola, and Mountain Dew. In 1966, 7-Eleven and the Icee Company engaged into a licencing agreement for the sale of slushies at 7-Eleven locations.
Initially, novelty names such as Pink Fink, Adults Only, Moonshine, Sticky Icky, and Redeye were assigned to flavours. In 1991, after Southland’s bankruptcy in 1990, its parent company, 7-Eleven Japan, purchased 70% of the company for $430 million and promptly began implementing enhancements at U.S. locations.
