The film’s producers were stunned and refused to show it.

Critics concur that Gance’s innovations in cinematic techniques were ingenious. He utilised Polyvision to construct his multiscreen projects and experimented with superimposition of images, extreme close-ups, and rapid rhythmic cutting. Gance made the camera mobile in unusual ways by using hand-held techniques, mounting it on wires or a pendulum, and even securing it to a horse.
