National Advent Calendar Day 2023: National Advent Calendar Day is observed this year on November 1, the first Wednesday of November. This festival marks the introduction of Aldi’s renowned Advent calendars and functions as the official commencement of the holiday season. As one counts down to the holidays, advent calendars are a delightful way to disseminate holiday spirit among family and friends, as they offer the opportunity to discover a new surprise each day. Aldi conceived of the concept for the 2020 holiday.

National Advent Calendar Day 2023: History

Simply put, an Advent calendar tracks the passage of time until Christmas. Wood or paper composes the majority of Advent calendars. In the 19th and 20th centuries, German Lutherans were the first to adopt the calendar; other Christian denominations soon followed. In the early 1900s, German immigrant Gerhard Lang is credited with designing the first printed Advent calendar. However, cardboard restrictions in Germany imposed during World War II compelled Lang to shut down his business in the 1930s. During this period, the production of calendars incorporating photographs was prohibited. In contrast, the Nazis devised a brochure containing illustrations of blown-up vehicles and swastikas as their Advent calendar.

Following World War II, a calendar by Stuttgart artist Richard Sellmer depicted a more conventional winter town setting. “The Little Lown” was the calendar’s appellation. Sellmer had successfully launched a commercial Advent calendar enterprise and commenced large-scale calendar production by 1946. In the 1950s, his calendars were exported to the United States. Cadbury did not enter the chocolate Advent calendar market until 1971, when it introduced its own calendar in the United Kingdom. The first chocolate Advent calendar was introduced in 1958. Between 1972 and 1986, Cadbury produced advent calendars sporadically; it wasn’t until 1993 that they became a staple.

Following a prosperous inaugural year for its holiday calendar, Aldi proclaimed the initial Wednesday of November as National Advent Calendar Day in 2020. On this day, Aldi offers discounts on their most popular Advent calendars, which helps to kick off the holiday season.
