National Alabama Day is celebrated on December 14th each year. It commemorates the day in 1819 when Alabama became a state.
When most people think of Alabama, they think of the Civil War and the civil rights movement. However, there is much more to the history of this southern state.
Alabama was first inhabited by Native Americans who were members of the Creek and Cherokee tribes. The first European settlers arrived in the early 1600s, and by 1702 Mobile was founded as the capital of French Louisiana.
In 1763, control of Alabama changed hands from France to Great Britain after the Seven Years’ War. The British divided Alabama into two colonies: West Florida and East Florida.
After the American Revolution, both Floridas were ceded back to Spain. But in 1810, West Florida declared independence from Spain and set up its own government. This short-lived Republic of West Florida included parts of what are now Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama.
One year later, in 1811, Mississippi Territory was established which included all of present-day Mississippi and Alabama. The capital of Mississippi Territory was located at Saint Stephens until it moved to Huntsville in 1819 – the same year that Alabama became a state.
