The background of National American Red Cross Founder’s Day

The American Red Cross, also known as the American National Red Cross, is a humanitarian organisation that coordinates disaster relief efforts throughout the United States.

The American Red Cross is the American chapter or national society of a global humanitarian aid endeavour. Clara, also known as Clarissa Harlowe Barton, founded the American chapter of the Red Cross, which has its headquarters in Washington, D.C., and is administered by volunteers.

Clara Barton, like the majority of women during the American Civil War, nursed the wounded on the battlefields, garnering her the moniker “Angel of the Battlefield.” Barton travelled to Europe after the war and volunteered with the International Red Cross during the Franco-German War of 1870-1871. When she returned to the United States, she was determined that her country would join the global Red Cross network. She founded the American Red Cross with the help of influential acquaintances and contacts, such as the American social reformer, abolitionist, orator, author, and statesman Frederick Douglass. She served as the organization’s president until her retirement.
