In other terms, it is one of the four parts or countries that comprise the Netherlands Kingdom.

The background of National Anthem and Flag Day in Curaçao

Between 1815 and 1828, and again between 1845 and 1954, Curacao was a Dutch colony. In 1954, the island gained autonomy as a constituent of the Dutch Antilles. After thirty years, the island council unveiled the national flag and anthem of Curacao. In 2010, following a referendum that resulted in a change to the constitution, Curacao was proclaimed a separate country, but as a constituent or part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. This modification occurred following the dissolution of the Netherlands Antilles.

In 1984, the nation’s flag, which was designed by Martin Den Dulk, was ratified. The flag of Curacao has a gorgeous yet simple design: a blue field with a yellow horizontal line at the bottom. In addition, the two white stars with five points in the canton depict the islands of Curacao and Klein Curacao. The colours blue and yellow represent, respectively, the heavens and the sea. The national anthem of Curacao, “Himno di Korsou,” was ratified in 1978. Friar Radulphus composed the original lyrics, but the government subsequently commissioned a group to revise them. The melody for the anthem was composed by Friar Candidus Nouwens.

In 2019, a 1,000 Netherlands Antillean cent stamp was issued to commemorate Flag Day’s 35th anniversary. Radulphus, a Dutchman, composed the original verses of the Anthem of Curacao in 1898 to commemorate the coronation of Queen Wilhelmina. The verses were sung to the Dutch National Anthem until 1930, when a new melody was composed. The initial lyrics were changed in 1978 because they were deemed “colonial.”
