National Barcode Day 2023: Date, History, Facts, Activities

National Barcode Day is observed annually on June 26 to commemorate the first time a product’s Universal Product Code (UPC) was detected. This event occurred in retail culture and is commemorated by National Barcode Day. The first UPC was scanned in a grocery store in Troy, Ohio, United States, on June 26, 1974. It was located on a pack of Wrigley’s Juicy Fruit chew. It was a landmark achievement for the grocery industry and remains one of its greatest innovations to date.

The background of National Barcode Day

In 1932, the American Wallace Flint proposed using perforated cards to automate store checkout. In 1949, Bernard Silver and Norman Joseph Woodland, a graduate student at Drexel University — formerly Drexel Institute of Technology — devised a code to implement Flint’s concept, and they filed a patent application for the code. In the 1960s and 1970s, North American railroads began experimenting with multicolor bar codes for tracing railcars. However, the system quickly became obsolete and was superseded by Automatic Equipment Identification (A.E.I. ), a radio-based system.

1973 saw the establishment of the Uniform Product Code Council (U.P.C.C. ), which contributed to the definition of the numerical format that constituted the Uniform Product Code. In response to this evolution, companies in the technology sector began to offer alternative symbol representations. One of these variants was created by IBM’s George J. Laurer and featured a minor modification to the initial symbol. Ultimately, this design was selected as the alternative.

On June 26, 1974, a 10-pack of chewing gum was purchased at the Marsh supermarket in Troy, Ohio, and became the first U.P.C.-marked grocery item in the history of the United States to be effectively scanned by a barcode. A facsimile of the transaction is currently on display at the Smithsonian.
