Child abuse is more prevalent than we believe. National Be Someone Day is observed annually on July 21 to end child maltreatment and seek justice for its victims. The purpose of this day is straightforward: to encourage adults to recognise and report instances of child maltreatment. You can make a difference in less than ten seconds by reporting such incidents to local authorities. Today is our opportunity to become heroes by sparing a child’s life.
The background of National Be Someone Day
National Be Someone Day was created to restore a child’s dignity who may be experiencing physical or emotional distress. On July 21, adults are encouraged to dedicate a portion of their day to making a difference in the life of a child by reporting child maltreatment. People make commitments to recognise, report, and rehabilitate abused children. The ultimate objective of the day is to herald in a future in which every child has the right to a joyful and respectable childhood. Project Harmony established the day not only to eliminate child abuse but also to bring communities together through education and awareness.
Child abuse or child maltreatment refers to the physical, sexual, and/or psychological abuse or neglect of a child, typically at the hands of a parent or carer. It may also include any act or omission by a parent, a carer, or other people with whom the child interacts that results in damage to the child’s well-being in their community or in places such as school. ‘Child abuse’ and ‘child maltreatment’ are frequently used synonymously. Nevertheless, child maltreatment is defined as the neglect, exploitation, and trafficking of a child. Different jurisdictions have varying policies regarding mandatory reporting, definitions of what constitutes child maltreatment in order to place a child in foster care, and criminal prosecution. However, it is universally acknowledged that every child has the right to a secure childhood, and it is the responsibility of the adults in their lives to ensure this.
