National Benjamin Day is annually observed on June 7. Benjamin, according to the Hebrew Bible, is Jacob’s twelfth and final son and the progenitor of the Benjamin Israelite Tribe. This name means’son of the right hand’ or’son of the south.’ It means’son of my days’ in the Samaritan Pentateuch. In addition to its historical and spiritual significance for Jewish parents, Benjamin is an excellent choice because it has so many gorgeous nicknames. These include Ben, Benny, and even Benji, which you will appreciate calling your child Benjamin as he ages. For more than a century, the name Benjamin has consistently ranked within the Top 100 on U.S. popularity lists.

The background of National Benjamin Day

The biblical Benjamin was the youngest of Jacob’s 12 sons. Rachel perished while giving birth to him, according to Genesis 35:18. And while her spirit was departing (because she was dying), she referred to him as Ben-oni, but his father called him Benjamin. The name ‘Benoni’ translates to’son of my sorrow,’ but his father did not want him to have such a negative name following the death of his mother, so he was given the name ‘Benyamin’ instead. Benjamin is most likely translated as’son of the south’ because he was the only son of Jacob to be born in Canaan, south of Mesopotamia.

However, ‘yamim’ is thought to be a translation of the Hebrew word ‘years,’ lending another interpretation to the name’s meaning as’son of my old age,’ referring to Benjamin’s status as Jacob’s last child. Surprisingly, the name was frequently bestowed to boys whose mothers died during childbirth during the Middle Ages. It is no longer associated with such regrettable associations. It is widely used in the United States, England, and Scotland as an anglicised form of the Gaelic name ‘Beathan,’ which paradoxically means’son of life.’ Since the mid-1970s, Benjamin has been one of the top 30 boys’ names; this may be due to the critically acclaimed 1967 film “The Graduate” and its protagonist, Benjamin Braddock.

Despite having a biblical origin, the name Benjamin appears to transcend religion and is equally popular among Christians, Jews, and agnostics. Everyone finds something endearing about this name. It has longevity without appearing trendy or dated, and all of its forms are alluring. Benjamin’s extensive and appealing form can be shortened to ‘Benjy’ or ‘Ben.’ It is not surprising that it has maintained its popularity for so long.
