National Bison Day 2023: Dates, Five Bison facts

National Bison Day 2023: They are ubiquitous, including on state flags, coins, and the insignia of sports teams. We are not discussing the bald eagle, however. This honor is reserved for bison native to North America. All Americans should pause on November 4, the first Saturday of November, annually, to commemorate National Bison Day, which honors the ecological and cultural contributions of bison. History of National Bison Day

A push to formally recognize the American bison as the country’s national mammal was started in 2012. The organizers chose the first Saturday in November to be National Bison Day. Every year, the US Senate approved resolutions endorsing the enactment of a proclamation of this kind. President Barack Obama signed the legislation designating the American bison as the country’s national mammal on May 9, 2016.
