National Black America’s Day of Repentance 2023: Date, History, Facts about Repentance

Repentance is a stage of redemption in which an individual turns away from sin. In Confession and Absolution, contrition plays a crucial role in Catholic, Lutheran, Orthodox, and Anglican theologies.

National Day of Repentance for Black Americans is observed annually on June 18. The holiday was founded by Sister Yvonne Roberson for the purpose of healing Black Americans through reflection and repentance.

People observe the holiday by fasting, praying, and reflecting on their mistakes from dawn to dusk. They abstain from food, drink, sex, alcohol, and narcotics and limit their electronic and occupational use. The arduous fast is broken by praising God prior to consuming a light supper.

The background of National Black America’s Day of Repentance

Repentance is a stage of redemption in which an individual turns away from sin. In Confession and Absolution, contrition plays a crucial role in Catholic, Lutheran, Orthodox, and Anglican theologies. Repentance in the Hebrew Bible is derived from the Hebrew term ‘teshuvah,’ which means’return.’ John the Baptist preached contrition in the New Testament, and Jesus preached repentance when he proclaimed the Gospel. Peter and Paul the Apostle emphasised repentance in their preaching as well.

Repentance, according to Emanuel Swedenborg and Jonathan S. Rose, is any action that prevents us from perpetrating evil acts, which are sins against God. Repentance is essential for absolution in Roman Catholicism. The Augsburg Confession, one of the most important documents of the Protestant Reformation, a religious reform movement in the 1500s, divides repentance into two parts: “One is contrition, that is, terrors smiting the conscience through the knowledge of sin,” and “The other is faith, which is born of the Gospel, or of absolution, and believes that for Christ’s sake, sins are forgiven, comforts the conscience, and delivers it from terrors.”

In the Reformed tradition, according to John Calvin, repentance is the genuine conversion of one’s life to God, motivated by reverence for God. In contrast, evangelicalism considers repentance necessary for salvation and new birth.

5 FACTS ABOUT REPENTANCE

Repentance is a mental transformation.

When John the Baptist announced the first coming of Christ, he exhorted people to repent because “the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

Christ is physically absent from the world during the Great Commission, but he is present in the hearts of his disciples, and through them he calls for contrition for the Kingdom of God.

According to Calvinists, repentance is a command, not a voluntary choice.

God offers the opportunity of contrition as a gift, and it is up to the people to accept it.
