However, there was no expedited shipping available. Join a book club or reread a favourite novel today, because National Book Lovers Day is awesome.

The background of National Book Lovers Day

Book Lovers Day celebrates literature, which has endured and maintained its significance over time. Our affection for books knows no bounds; we will one day write a book about it.

Prior to the invention of paper, books appeared in the form of tablets, manuscripts, and engravings. Every civilization had its own method for recording history. In approximately 3500 B.C., Mesopotamians used a pointed instrument manufactured from the stem of the calamus plant to make markings on clay tablets. These inscriptions on the damp clay were termed ‘cuneiform.’ In modern-day Iraq, approximately 20,000 of these tablets were discovered.

China invented paper in the first century A.D. Ts’ai Lun devised paper by experimenting with various materials, including hemp, fishnets, and the mulberry plant. Over time, printing on woodblocks also became the predominant method of book reproduction in China. The scrolls from the fourth century B.C. are considered the first ‘books,’ but the oldest extant compiled book is “The Diamond Sutra,” which was published in China on May 11, 856.

At the beginning of the 20th century, hardcover books dominated the market due to the prestige associated with their bindings. But beginning in 1937, paperbacks became increasingly popular, paving the way for digests, pulp fiction, and pocket-sized volumes.

Computer and technological advancements lead to the digitization of books, with “The New Grolier Electronic Encyclopaedia” being the first book sold on CD in the 1980s.
