Each year, National Boss/Employee Exchange Day is observed on the Monday following Labour Day. This is a special day for supervisors and employees to exchange roles and experience the other’s responsibilities. For just one day, both groups assume the roles of the other. Now, before you slide into the swivel chair of your supervisor, let’s examine some history.
National Boss/Employee Exchange Day’s origins are unknown, but the history of labour may be as old as humanity itself. Since the beginning of time, humans have engaged in labour in some form or another. During the prehistoric period, work was primarily subsistence-based and limited to the bare duties required for survival, such as food cultivation and shelter construction. As the level of civilization increased, so did the division of labour. People with expertise in particular duties began to specialise and be compensated for their work.
Europe was home to feudal societies during the Middle Ages. During this time period, labourers known as vassals were granted land in exchange for their service to a lord. However, the system was inadequate because it resulted in unjust treatment of employees.
The Renaissance ushered in improved working conditions for labourers, who began earning higher earnings and gaining more freedoms. The Industrial Revolution strengthened this fresh start. From 1760 to 1840, labor-intensive tasks were gradually replaced by machines.
International and regional laws ensure that the rights of labourers are adequately protected in the modern era. Work may be cognitive or sedentary. Even more so, technological advancements have made remote work possible. After the COVID-19 pandemic, which left an indelible mark on the world, 80% of U.S. labourers continued to perform remote work as of April 2021.
As an employee, you should break the ice by requesting a selfie with your supervisor. As a manager, you should snap group photos with your employees. You may be astonished to discover that “Deke from Accounting” smiles!
