History of National Boston Day

The origin of the name Boston is a place that is the state capital of Massachusetts. However, this city also received its name from Boston, a small port town in Lincolnshire, England. Most likely, the city was named after this town because the majority of immigrants originated from there. Colonist Thomas Dudley explained in a letter that in 1631, Countess of Lincoln desired to name the Massachusetts capital Boston.

Prior to the arrival of the Massachusetts Bay colonists in 1603, Boston was known as Trimount, likely due to the large hill with three peaks that comprised the area’s geography at the time. When Boston’s land-making project began, these peaks were cut down to fill the bays, and only Beacon Hill remains today. Trimount was likely named by colonists, traders, or explorers because it is not a Native American word.

Boston in England means Botolph’s town, which honours the English saint Botolph from the seventh century. St. Botolph is the patron saint of travellers and farmers, and June 17 is his feast day in English. After the trend of naming people after place names, such as Brooklyn, Austin, and Dallas, Boston became popular.
