Smile! National Camera Day is celebrated on June 29, commemorating the fact that photography, once so complex that only a scientist could comprehend it, is now an integral part of our daily existence. The term “photography” is derived from two Greek words that, when combined, mean “light writing.” It’s a lovely way to describe what a camera enables us to do: tell a story without using words. It all dates back to the invention of the camera obscura over 800 years ago. The camera obscura, whose name means “dark chamber,” consisted of a frame with a hole on one side. Light would travel through the hole and into the box’s dark interior, where it would project an image onto the interior’s flat surface. Unfortunately, when the light went out, the image vanished — similar to Instagram, but without a photograph. Today, every smartphone user has access to a camera. Whether you enjoy shooting film and switching lenses or prefer the convenience of digital, consider how cameras have made storytelling simpler than ever on June 29.

NATIONAL CAMERA DAY EVENTS

Say cheddar!

Thanksgiving is not required to snap a family portrait. National Camera Day provides an additional reason to gather everyone for a summer photo shoot. Who can say? It has the potential to become the new family tradition.

Take a safari

This one doesn’t require a passport; all you need is the time to slow down and observe familiar environs in a new light. Have you traversed this thoroughfare a hundred times? Photograph it at various periods of the day, as the light varies. Enjoy nature walks in the woods? Photograph the knot in a tree or a solitary drop of rain up close. Wandering around with a camera can provide a fresh viewpoint on the world.

Engage in imaginative scrapbooking.

Photos can consume a significant amount of space on your computer or, worse, degrade when stored in crates. Create scrapbooks to organise your favourite items and eliminate the debris. Select photos with a specific individual in mind to create a highly personalised and cherished present.

5 FACTS THAT GIVE PHOTOGRAPHY A NEW APPEARANCE

Researchers at Wake Forest University discovered that the left side of our features photographs better than the right.

Due to the lengthy exposure time required to obtain a single image, many of the earliest photographic portraits were of deceased individuals.

Research published in the journal “Psychological Science” revealed that because being in a group averages out everyone’s features, we are perceived to appear better in group photos than in individual portraits.

In fact, the reason why people appear so glum in old photographs is due to necessity; it’s nearly impossible to maintain a smile when you have to remain perfectly still for hours in order to capture a single image.

Robert Cornelius set up his camera in the rear of his family’s store, removed the lens cap, and ran into the frame to take his own picture, a multi-minute process.
