National Carnation Day 2024: Every year on January 29, we mark National Carnation Day. Amazingly, the flowers have significance for practically every season and event. The 25th President of the United States, William McKinley, who was assassinated in 1901, wore a red carnation on his lapel. He inspired National Carnation Day.

National Carnation Day History

In honor of President William McKinley, National Carnation Day, commonly referred to as Red Carnation Day, was created. He was well-known for his passion of carnations and was born on January 29 of many years ago. He frequently wore one in his lapel. For a considerable amount of time, McKinley was known for his famous carnations, which he used frequently during his political career. It all began in 1876 when he was a Republican candidate for Congress in Ohio. Horticulturist Levi Lamborn, his rival, had developed a kind of vivid crimson carnations he called “Lamborn Red.” Lamborn offered McKinley one of his flowers before the candidate debates. Additionally, McKinley started to see carnations as lucky charms after winning the election; perhaps this was because they just kept going well for him.

There were carnations all over McKinley’s clothes and in the vase in his office. He kept an entire basket filled with carnations in the center of the Cabinet Room even when he was a guest in the White House. “Whenever someone came to see the President and couldn’t get an office, he got a carnation,” said one political joke. Taking one of the flowers, President McKinley would put it in the guest’s buttonhole.

According to legend, President McKinley gave the young girl the carnation he was wearing after he tragically died from an assassin’s bullet in September 1901. People think that after he removed the carnation, luck abandoned him. They established National Carnation Day in his memory following his passing. Lewis G. Reynolds of Dayton, Ohio, founded the nonprofit Carnation League of America, which started the official day. In the spirit of patriotism and to “encourage the growth of good citizenship and advance the greatness of the country by the proper observance of national holidays,” people wear carnations on this quiet memorial day.
