National Carolina Day 2024: Every year on January 17, people celebrate National Carolina Day, honoring everyone who has ever gone by the name Carolina! Its roots are in the languages of Spain, English, Italian, Portuguese, Catalan, Swedish, and German. It is primarily a feminine name. Carolina means “free” or “beautiful” woman in German. On the other hand, the name Carolina comes from the Latin Carolus (Charles), which commonly translates to “free man” or “freeholder.” Carolina can also mean “prettiest woman of the town” in Spanish or “song of happiness or joy” in French.

The background behind National Carolina Day

Among the notable figures with the name Carolina throughout history is Caroline of Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel. She was the daughter of Princess Augusta of Great Britain and Charles William Ferdinand, Duke of Brunswick, and was born in 1768. In 1794, she became engaged to her cousin George, who was already wed to Maria Fitzherbert in violation of the law.

She wed George, but the couple divorced soon after Princess Charlotte of Wales was born in 1796. Rumors regarding her partner and illegitimate child prompted an investigation into her private life. The investigators did, however, limit Caroline’s access to her kid and still failed to discover any evidence to support the rumors.

After Caroline relocated to Italy in 1814, she hired Bartolomeo Pergami as a servant, and the two quickly grew close. In 1817, she learned of her daughter’s death during childbirth from a passing messenger. George pushed on getting a divorce with Caroline after he assumed the thrones of Hanover and the United Kingdom in 1820, but she refused. British citizens who hated George and sympathized with Caroline were fond of her.

After gathering circumstantial evidence, George made the decision to divorce her and introduced the Pains and Penalties Bill to Parliament in 1820.
However, because of his unpopularity and the public’s celebration of Caroline, the Liverpool ministry withdrew the measure. In 1821, Caroline was not allowed to attend George’s coronation. After becoming ill in London in 1821 and passing away three weeks later, her funeral procession traveled through the city to Braunschweig, Germany, where she was laid to rest.
