National Cartonnage Day 2023: Date, History, Facts about Cardboard Boxes

National Cartonnage Day is annually observed on September 18. It is a celebration of the art of cartonnage, or box-making. The practise originated in France in the nineteenth century and has recently experienced a resurgence. More and more individuals are discovering the pleasure of cartonnage and decorating their living spaces with boxes made from a variety of fabrics and materials. This centuries-old method involves constructing fabric-covered boxes with a cardboard base from the inside out. Fabric is subsequently laminated to the base and then decorated to the artist’s specifications.

The background of National Cartonnage Day

Cardboard crates occupy an almost irreplaceable position in our lives today. They have only been around for a few centuries, which is quite interesting! According to historians, the first paperboard package was invented in England by M. Treverton & Son in 1817. In Germany, the invention of the cardboard package followed in the same year. Scotsman Robert Gair devised the pre-cut cardboard box in 1890.

The introduction of breakfast cereal accelerated the widespread adoption of cardboard packaging. The Kellogg Company was the first company to use cardboard cases as cereal packaging. In 1856, England patented pleated paper, which was initially only used as a lining for tall headwear.

The use of corrugated boxboard as a shipping material was not patented until 1871, when Albert Jones received a patent for single-sided corrugated boards. Jones wrapped bottles and glass lantern chimneys with his patent. In 1874, G. Smyth made mass production of corrugated boards practicable. In the early 1900s, wooden crates and boxes were being rapidly supplanted by cardboard containers, which had only been devised in 1895.
