National Catherine Day 2024: We celebrate National Catherine Day on January 13. The Greek word katharos, which means pure, is linked to Catherine or Katherine. Because it is derived from the name of the Christian saint Catherine of Alexandria, a martyr from the fourth century, it is a feminine name that is popular among Christian nations. Its origins are Anglo-Saxon, French, Irish, and Latin. In Latin, it comes from Katharina. In the United States and Britain, it was one of the top 100 most well-known names in 1880, but by 1950, its appeal had diminished.
The National Catherine Day History
There is a great historical significance to the name Catherine. Catherine the Great, the longest-ruling female ruler of Russia, was one such Catherine. Catherine, the grandson of Peter the Great and heir apparent to the Russian throne, was selected at the age of 14 to marry Karl Ulrich. After arriving in Russia in 1744, Catherine’s marriage ended in shame and sadness. She experienced a slow shift in circumstances.
Peter, Catherine’s husband, succeeded to the empress after she died in 1761, but he also sided with Prussia to cease Russia’s participation in the continuing Seven Years War. The soldiers supported and preferred Catherine. Both the people of St. Petersburg and Moscow supported her, and the aristocracy enjoyed her liberal views.
She declared herself the autocrat and emperor in the Kazan Cathedral in 1762. Peter III was assassinated eight days later. After being crowned in Moscow in September, she went on to rule as Catherine II for 34 years. She secularized the property of the clergy and reduced it to state-paid functions, replenishing the state coffers, which had been in unstable circumstances since Elizabeth’s death. She forced the undefined Polish monarch Stanislaw Poniatowski, her former lover, to take control of the country in 1764.
