National Child Identity Theft Day is observed on September 1 each year. Did you know the term “identity theft” was coined approximately 58 years ago? Every year, approximately 15 million Americans fall victim to this issue. Unfortunately, even minors are susceptible to identity theft. Therefore, Experian created National Child Identity Theft Awareness Day to raise awareness about child identity theft and educate people about how to protect children.

The background of National Child Identity Theft Awareness Day

A perpetrator commits identity theft when they steal a victim’s personal information in order to conduct crimes, such as stealing credit card information, impersonating them to access their data, using phone services, misusing licences, etc. People originally believed that only adults could have their identities taken. However, it was subsequently discovered that criminals were also targeting children due to the availability of their personal information online. This resulted in the formation of numerous organisations and bureaus around the globe that combat identity theft. Their primary goal is to regulate information processing and information exchange in order to protect individuals from these criminals.

The information services company Experian established National Child Identity Theft Awareness Day in 2018. The organisation was formerly a division of Credit Data Corporation; in 1964, Thompson Ramo Wooldridge Inc (T.R.W.) acquired it and renamed it TRW Information Systems and Services Inc. Experian acquired Clarity Services in 2017 to become a multinational consumer credit reporting agency. Since then, it has utilised its sophisticated analytical systems to safeguard consumer privacy.

National Child Identity Theft Awareness Day is observed on September 1 because new school semesters begin on that date, making it the ideal opportunity to educate parents about identity theft and how to protect themselves and their children.
